Last-Minute Family Activities Before the Kids Go Back to School

For many students across Georgia, the start of a new school year is right around the corner. While your family may be busy checking off school supply lists, shopping for new clothes, and preparing for the return of early mornings, do not forget to make time for one last summer adventure.

From bike rides and paddling trips to animal encounters and water park thrills, Henry County offers plenty of ways to spend quality time together before classes, practices, and homework are back in full swing.

Rent a Bike at Atlanta Trek and Pick a Route

Explore Henry County on two wheels with a visit to Atlanta Trek in McDonough. Whether your family includes experienced cyclists or beginners looking for a leisurely ride, the knowledgeable team can help you select the right bike and gear for your adventure.

Bicycles are available to rent for periods ranging from one day to a full week, giving you plenty of time to discover nearby parks and trails at your own pace.

Walk, Run or Roll at Panola Mountain State Park

Panola Mountain State Park offers outdoor adventures for nearly every interest and activity level. Walk, jog, bike, or skate along the paved PATH Foundation Trail, explore one of the park’s wooded hiking trails, or enjoy a picnic near the playground.

Families can also try activities such as archery, geocaching, birding, and fishing. Access to the protected granite mountain is limited to ranger-led hikes, so reservations are required for anyone hoping to experience the summit. Bicycle rentals are also available at the park.

Meet the Rescued Animals at Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary

Discover one of Henry County’s most inspiring attractions at Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary. Set on 121 peaceful acres in Locust Grove, the nonprofit provides lifelong care for rescued exotic animals, wildlife, and domestic livestock.

Follow the sanctuary’s paved pathways to see bears, big cats, primates, birds, farm animals, and other residents while learning about responsible animal care. Pack a lunch to enjoy in the picnic area, wear comfortable walking shoes, and call ahead before visiting as operations are weather permitting.

Make a Splash at Kensley Grace Waterpark

Cool off during one of the final weekends of summer at Kensley Grace Waterpark, one of Henry County’s newest family attractions. The outdoor water park features colorful slides, a lazy river, a Wave Rider, a zero-entry pool, and interactive water features for younger visitors.

Beginning August 1, 2026, the outdoor water park will operate on Saturdays and Sundays. It will also open on Monday, September 7, for Labor Day, which will be the final day of its inaugural season. Admission to the water park includes access to the indoor Henry County Aquatic Center, making it easy to spend an entire day in the water.

Enjoy the Final Flavors of Summer at Southern Belle Farm

Savor the last tastes of the season at Southern Belle Farm in McDonough. U-pick peaches may be available while supplies last, but crop conditions can change throughout the day, so check the farm’s website or call before making the trip.

Even when picking is unavailable, families can visit the Country Market and bakery for seasonal produce, homemade ice cream, cobbler, Mimi’s Pound Cake, and other farm-fresh treats. The farm’s animals are also available to visit during posted hours. Fall activities, including the pumpkin patch, corn maze, and family attractions, are scheduled to begin September 19, 2026.

Play Disc Golf at J.P. Moseley Park

Active families can work up a sweat together at J.P. Moseley Park in Stockbridge. The park is home to a 37-hole, championship-caliber disc golf course featuring a mix of open spaces, wooded fairways, and layouts suited to different experience levels.

The course is free to play, but visitors should bring their own discs. The surrounding park also includes athletic fields, a playground, and the J.P. Moseley Recreation Center, giving families several ways to stay active during their visit.

Try FootGolf and More at Rum Creek Golf

Trade traditional golf clubs for a soccer ball during a round of FootGolf at Rum Creek Golf. This family-friendly activity combines the strategy of golf with the energy of soccer as players kick a ball toward oversized holes throughout the nine-hole course.

Families can also practice their swings at the driving range or play the nine-hole, par-3 executive golf course. With adult and junior tee boxes available, Rum Creek offers options for both seasoned golfers and younger players learning the game.

Go Kayaking at Butler’s Bridge Park

Nestled along the scenic South River, Butler’s Bridge Park offers a peaceful outdoor escape for paddlers, hikers, and nature lovers. Bring your kayak for time on the river, explore the wooded surroundings, or pack a picnic and relax beside the water.

Before launching, check the weather and current river conditions. Families should also bring their own paddling equipment, personal flotation devices, and any other safety gear needed for the trip.

Tips for Outdoor Summer Fun

Sunny days and warm temperatures are part of summertime in Georgia, so plan ahead before heading outdoors. Bring plenty of water, apply sunscreen regularly, and pack hats, sunglasses, bug spray, and comfortable shoes.

Hours, admission requirements, crop availability, and weather-related conditions can change, especially as summer operations transition into fall schedules. Check each attraction’s official website or social media pages before leaving home to ensure your family can make the most of its final summer outing.

The first school bell may be approaching, but there is still time to squeeze in another family memory. Choose an adventure, gather the kids, and spend one more summer day in Henry County, Georgia.
