Locust Grove Day: A Timeless Celebration of Community

Posts on April 4, 2025 in Family-Friendly

Locust Grove Day, the longest-running festival in Henry County, traces its roots back to 1956. Originally known as Fire Engine Day, the celebration began as a spirited street dance with music from local performers. The Locust Grove Volunteer Fire Department sold beer and barbecue chicken to raise funds—combining good food, great music, and a worthy cause. As the community grew, so did the event. Over time, Fire Engine Day transformed into what is now Locust Grove Day, retaining its festive spirit while evolving into a broader celebration of community.

What once served as a government fundraiser has evolved into a true community-led event, shaped by the very people it celebrates. In 1989, the Locust Grove City Council took over sponsorship, and today, the Locust Grove Events Committee leads the charge in organizing this cherished tradition.

Though the name and scope have changed, the heart of the festival remains a beloved constant. The day kicks off with a parade through downtown, ending at City Hall, where the front lawn becomes a bustling hub of arts, crafts, and food vendors. Supporting small businesses is a key part of the festival’s intent. By providing a platform for local vendors, the event aims to strengthen the local economy while fostering a stronger sense of community.

Throughout the day, guests of all ages enjoy a wide variety of entertainment and family-friendly activities. As evening settles in, the celebration continues with live music, an old-fashioned street dance, delicious concessions, and a fireworks display that lights up the night sky—offering a perfect end to a day dedicated to community connection.

The Locust Grove Events Committee continually adapts the celebration to reflect the town’s evolving needs and desires. Recent additions like carnival rides, inflatables, and designated rest areas help ensure guests can stay longer and enjoy more of the day’s festivities in comfort. These enhancements are designed with inclusivity in mind—welcoming new residents and visitors by helping them feel like part of Locust Grove.

Looking ahead, the vision for Locust Grove Day includes expanding the festival into a full weekend. Plans are in the works to add more live music and additional attractions that encourage attendees to linger and enjoy an extended celebration.

Those who have called Locust Grove home for generations look forward to the day with great anticipation—and the same goes for visitors. At its core, Locust Grove Day is about connection. The committee’s vision is to create events that allow people to see familiar faces again and again—building trust, friendship, and a deeper sense of belonging with each gathering. Whether you’re a lifelong resident, a newcomer, or simply passing through, you’re met with the same kindness, excitement, and warm welcome, especially during this annual celebration of camaraderie and community pride.
