Panola Mountain Hikes

Discover the unique thrill of a guided hike at Panola Mountain State Park, where a 100-acre granite monadnock rises above the southeast Atlanta metropolitan area and shelters a fragile, rare ecosystem. These hikes, led by trained park staff or volunteers, are the only way to access the summit and conserve the delicate plant and lichen communities that cling to the rock surface.

On the “Guided Mountain Hike,” participants traverse approximately 3.5 miles of terrain with elevation changes and uneven footing, beginning at the park’s Nature Center and climbing toward the exposed granite outcrop of Panola Mountain. Along the way, you’ll learn about the mountain’s geology, ecology, and cultural history, including its designation as a National Natural Landmark.

Reservations are required, and groups are limited, so this is a curated experience that balances education, adventure, and conservation. It’s ideal for visitors who want more than a stroll: prepare with sturdy shoes, plenty of water, and a readiness to explore a piece of Georgia’s natural heritage.
